What a socket tester can do
A suitable consumer socket tester may provide basic indication about the outlet condition according to the device's own instructions. The homeowner should record the tester indication and visible condition without opening the socket or electrical system.
Before testing
Inspect the tester for damage and read its instructions. Do not use equipment that appears damaged or unsuitable for the outlet type. Keep hands dry and avoid testing where there are signs of water exposure or obvious electrical damage.
Record the result correctly
If the tester indicates a normal condition, mark the check as no issue rather than creating a defect. If it shows an abnormal indication, photograph the tester result and socket location where safe, record the observation and flag it for appropriate follow-up.
Know the limits
A plug-in tester cannot certify the entire electrical installation. It does not replace a qualified electrician, proper electrical testing or professional safety assessment.
Stop immediately and seek professional help if you see exposed wiring, sparking, burning, heat damage, unusual smell or other serious electrical concerns.
